Civil partnerships came into force on 5th December 2005, the first partnerships in the UK formed on 21st December 2005. A civil partnership is between two people of the same sex and is now legally recognised with the status 'legal partner'.

Any venue which currently holds a license to perform civil ceremonies can host civil partnership ceremonies. The ceremony is purely a civil procedure therefore cannot be performed within a religious building. As with any civil wedding you and your partner can form your partnership between the hours of 8am and 6pm. Should you wish to do so, you can enhance your ceremony by adding your own vows and readings. All you have to do is discuss it with the registar beforehand and he/she can integrate it into the legal ceremony.
